Discover the science behind how culture shapes the way we grow, eat and care for ourselves in this hands‑on workshop.

You’ll explore the surprising links between traditional knowledge, food and cutting‑edge research from the Medical Research Council Laboratory of Medical Sciences (MRC LMS). Discover why weight and health are not always directly linked, what body fat actually is, and why some types protect us while others increase disease risk. Learn how our metabolism respond differently to food, culture and environment.

At this workshop, co‑designed with the Ubele Initiative, join discussions on the benefits of traditional foods from across the world, including the Mediterranean, Africa and the Caribbean. MRC LMS researchers will introduce insights from research into fat, metabolism and disease, showing how diets from across the globe can support a healthy body, and why health cannot be understood through weight alone.

Then, work with artist Michael McMillan to contribute to garden art celebrating community wisdom, creativity and the many ways we can all grow well together.
