Ever wondered what happiness sounds like?
Serotonin is often called the "happiness molecule" because of its role in mood and wellbeing. It helps regulate how different parts of our body communicate, especially through the fascinating connection between the gut and the brain. But despite how often we hear about serotonin in discussions about mental health, the way it behaves inside our cells is difficult to understand.
In labs at Imperial College London, we have measured concentrations of neurotransmitters like serotonin from gut and brain cells. These measurements appear as signals showing how serotonin levels rise and fall over time. We have studied these complex graphs and heatmaps to decipher the patterns, but what if we could hear these changes instead? Come experience a project that explores a new way of experiencing these biological signals—through music!
This team has transformed real serotonin data into music, using a process called sonification, converting the patterns in the signals into musical elements such as pitch and rhythm. Each note you hear represents a real biological event occurring in a cell.
At this interactive exhibition, visitors will be able to listen to, and remix, songs generated from serotonin signals. By changing instruments, tempo and combinations of signals, you can create your own musical interpretation of living biology! Hear the hidden rhythms of your cells through this exciting blend of neuroscience, technology and music.
