Take part in a hands-on crowd-sourced weaving installation!

Created by the Ageing Epidemiology Research Unit from Imperial College London’s School of Public Health, whose work explores the risk factors behind neurodegenerative diseases of ageing like dementia.

Understanding why some people face greater risks as they age depends on research contributions from many different communities—and this exhibit brings that idea to life through a shared creative activity. Visitors are invited to choose a piece of fabric or ribbon that represents them or their community and weave it into a freestanding loom. As more people take part, the tapestry becomes a vibrant artwork symbolising our varied personal relationships with dementia.

The exhibit also offers a welcoming space for conversations about healthy ageing, early prediction, prevention and the science behind dementia. As the piece grows throughout the day, it reflects the central message of the team’s research: real progress in understanding brain health comes from connection—the fabric we share, the communities we build and the knowledge we create together.
