Why we infected healthy people with COVID
Event schedule details
Sunday 19 June
Event location details
G16 Sir Alexander Fleming Building
Imperial College London
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, researchers from Imperial infected 36 healthy people with COVID-19. Find out why, how they made it safe, and what they learnt.
The world’s first human COVID-19 human challenge study was set up by Imperial College to help improve our understanding of COVID-19 infection and develop a platform for testing new vaccines and treatments in the future.
In this session we hear from those who administered the COVID-19 virus to healthy participants in the trial, as well as the trialists themselves about their experience. From their reflections and recollections, you will get a chance to see how science actually worked during the height of the pandemic, and how ethical approval is sought for a study that posed risks to people’s physical and mental heath.
There will also be drop-in spaces available.
This event will have some advance tickets released ahead of the Festival weekend.
To attend the Festival, please make sure to register for free. Registering is the only way to receive the latest Festival updates, a first-look at the full programme, and opportunities to book onto popular talks, creative workshops and tours.
