Step into The Great Counter Exhibition of 2026, a space to question, reframe and reimagine one of history’s most iconic showcases.

In 1851, the Great Exhibition filled the Crystal Palace with what was described at the time as the greatest display of human ingenuity the world had ever seen. Thousands of objects were gathered from across the globe, drawing millions of visitors. But whose ingenuity was recognised and whose stories were left untold? Many of the communities whose knowledge, labour and materials shaped the exhibition had little or no say in how they were represented, if they were included at all.

175 years later, this is an invitation to do things differently.

Across the Festival weekend, you’re invited to contribute your own objects, memories and ideas to highlight the cultures, crafts and innovations that you believe deserve recognition. Create exhibition labels, experiment with collage and add to a growing counter-catalogue that uncovers hidden histories and celebrates overlooked voices.

Each contribution becomes part of a collective, evolving display; an exhibition shaped by many perspectives rather than a single narrative. Together, we can expand what “human ingenuity” really means today.

The Great Counter Exhibition of 2026 is created by Hekayyatna, a community-driven production house using storytelling to spark curiosity, foster connection and celebrate the richness of Global Majority cultures.
