Check out the winner of this year's Grantham Climate Art Prize, which invites young people to design street murals drawing attention to the climate crisis and the need for action to create a more sustainable world!
Viridescent Window was designed by Plaifah Chaisen, who’s just turned 19, and then transformed into a mural by professional artist Michelle Meola.
Plaifah says: “Viridescent Window envisions the potential of cities when innovation and sustainability are fully embraced. Only through action can we guide our generation toward a greener future. The window, shining light on the future, offers a glimpse of what we can become. To reach this future, we must take collective charge. Even small steps - one idea, one effort at a time - can guide toward a sustainable tomorrow. From grey to green, the choice is ours.”
Look out for the four runner up designs displayed on BigBelly recycling bins around the Festival. We hope they inspire you to take more action to create a more sustainable planet and to use your voice to bring others on board!
About the Grantham Climate Art Prize
The Grantham Institute launched the Grantham Climate Art Prize in 2018 to draw attention to draw attention to the climate crisis through art. The prize began with an exhibition in a gallery but took to the streets from 2021 inviting young people to design street murals which were then painted by professional artists. Previous themes have focused on the biodiversity crisis and creating a greener, cleaner, cooler future.
The 2025 Art Prize theme was Design the Future: From Grey to Green – inspired by Imperial’s sustainability strategy. Young people were invited to submit a vision for a more sustainable future shaped by nature-based solutions and green innovation with the urban environment in mind. This winning design is the 13th mural in the Grantham Climate Art Prize series and the first at Imperial College – the others are across Great Britain from Brighton to Glasgow with three others in London (in Tower Hamlets, West Norwood and Nine Elms).
