Exhibition Road

Visit the 1851-der tent and discover the history of Exhibition Road through amazing archival content and modern day transporting innovations brought to the Great Exhibition Road Festival 2022 by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851.

As organisers of the ‘original’ Great Exhibition Festival of 1851, and founders of the Albertopolis estate, The Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 have a long history of nurturing innovations which have revolutionised British society. This is evident in the transportation sector.

Explore examples of transportation from the original exhibition of 1851 and meet 1851 Award holders who will demonstrate cutting edge technology before your eyes. Explore 1851-ders from the original Great Exhibition such as an early submarine prototype, locomotive engines, velocipedes and kite drawn carriages. Experiment with electric cars, peer under the bonnet and find out how they work, and learn all about the technology behind the fastest train in the world - the ‘levitating’ bullet train.
